    • Use equipment only as directed in this User Handbook
    • DO NOT immerse any part of this equipment in water
    • Store in a dry place
    • Keep equipment in the case provided when not in use
    • If left for prolonged period of time – remove alkaline batteries
    • Keep unit clean and free of dust and dirt
    • DO NOT repeatedly charge the batteries (where applicable) without using the equipment for at least 10 minutes to avoid overcharging
    • DO NOT leave the unit on charge for an excessive period of time (>12 hours)
    • Protect against excessive heat
    • Avoid dropping and rough treatment whenever possible
    • When cleaning only use water, a mild detergent or products such as Armoral.
    • Wipe dry. DO NOT use harsh chemicals or abrasives – particularly in the display/pushbutton areas.
    • Wipe the display only with glass cleaner or pads used to clean computer displays.
  • Work site safety

    The Basics

    • DO NOT open the enclosures (housings) of either the transmitter or receiver.
    • Use your companies, or other applicable safety code and rules when using this equipment.
    • Always call "Call Before You Dig" before starting any excavation.
    • Unless having the required authorization, license and appropriate training - DO NOT make connections to any pipe, cable or conductor.
    • DO NOT use this equipment in explosive areas - such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, heavy dust.
    • DO NOT use mechanical digging devices over the presence of a buried utility.
    • DO NOT use product battery chargers in the field - they are NOT waterproof.
    • DO NOT hold any un-insulated portion of the connection leads & clips when the transmitter is switched on.
    • Place the ground stake firmly in the ground before connecting the cable from the transmitter.
    • Always make connections to both target line and ground before turning on the transmitter.
    • DO NOT directly connect this equipment to cables or pipes that have a potential difference to ground of greater than 35V AC.

Interpreting the Information Provided by the Locator

    • Use all available information (As built plans, location of hand holds, manhole covers, warning signs etc) when planning and undertaking your locate.
    • All locators locate and providing depth and current readings based on electromagnetic signals that radiate from the buried cable or pipe. In most cases, these signals will enable the locator to pinpoint both position depth and current correctly - but - BEWARE - in some cases other factors will distort electromagnetic fields radiating from cable or pipe being located, resulting in incorrect information.
    • Always locate responsibly and use information learned during your training to interpret the information provided by the locator.
    • DO NOT provide information regarding depth of cable or pipe to anyone unless authorized to do so by your company. REMEMBER that depth measurements are to the center of the electromagnetic field or pipe - in the case of pipes this may be significantly deeper than the top of the pipe.

    ALWAYS DIG CAREFULLY!!!

  • Health & safety

Health & Safety: Using, Maintaining and Handling Sewer Camera Systems and Sondes

This is an important HEALTH & SAFETY WARNING regarding the precautions that should be taken by those employees and/or users involved in the use, maintenance or storage or handling of CCTV inspection systems (sewer cameras), Sondes  and other products used in or around sewers and drains. This document is intended as primarily for employees of GIC and its affiliates - however it is a good guide for companies with no policy. If your company has a policy, or there is applicable National, Federal, state or local laws, guidelines, recommendations or recommendations by professional organizations please adhere to those.

    People Effected
People involved in the following activities:

    • Users CCTV (sewer cameras) & Sondes
    • Those performing "On site" sales demonstrations
    • Those unpacking, packing, handling  of equipment that has been used in a sewer/drain
    • Those cleaning used camera systems
    • Those involved in the maintenance of used camera systems

    Risks
Sewers, drains and equipment used within them represent a considerable risk of infection, from a wide range of diseases carried by or associated with human or animal waste products. They include but are not limited to:

    • Gastroenteritis
    • Skin infections
    • Tetanus and Polio
    • Hepatitis
    • Eye infections
    • Weil's disease
    • Respiratory illness

    Transmission
These diseases are generally transmitted by:

    • Ingestion directly, or from hand to mouth
    • Cuts, open wounds, skin infections, or puncture wounds
    • Via the eye (generally from air borne particles, or hand to eye contact)
    • Inhalation

    Defence
The best defence against infection is as follows:

    • Personal hygiene
    • Inoculations
    • Equipment
    • Work practice

    Personal Hygiene

    • DO NOT touch eyes, mouth or face until after thoroughly disinfecting hands
    • DO NOT eat, drink, smoke until after thoroughly disinfecting hands
    • Ensure any skin infections, wounds or sores are covered thoroughly by waterproof dressings. If in doubt do not handle equipment
    • Use barrier cream to reduce risks of contaminants penetrating skin
    • Use disinfectant  on hands and contaminated areas after completion
    • Use moisturizing cream generally to keep skin in good condition (avoiding chaps/small cracks)
    • If cut in any way, clean with disinfectant and seek medical attention where appropriate

    Inoculations
GIC advises that all Users and people involved in the handling and maintenance of sewer cameras and Sondes have as a minimum the following inoculations (mandatory for GIC employees)

    • Typhoid
    • Tetanus
    • Hepatitis A
    • Hepatitis B (although generally spread via contact with blood or body fluids this virus can survive in some waste products for a period of time)

PLEASE NOTE  - Employees at risk that work in Indian markets and must also be inoculated against Polio.

PLEASE NOTE - Always check for any specific risks in the areas that you travel, risks can be associated with the "season" or specific region. If in doubt get inoculated and advise us (> safety@gicgroup.co.in  <)

    PLEASE NOTE
    - There are risks associated with some inoculations/vaccines. If in doubt regarding the management of the health & safety risk and that of the risk of vaccines - should be discussed with a medical professional.

    Equipment
The best form of defence against infection is not to come in contact with the contaminated material. Always:

    • Use rubber or latex gloves - to prevent skin contamination
    • Wear safety eye glass - to protect against airborne matter or splashed liquids, (and to avoid rubbing eyes)
    • Wear face mask - to protect against airborne matter or splashed liquids
    • Wear overalls designed for the purpose, or at minimum clothes that will stop contaminants reaching the skin
    • Use disinfectant and/or disinfectant wipes to clean up

    Work Practice
Much of this is covered by the Personal Hygiene and Equipment sections, however these addition actions must be followed:

    • NEVER enter a manhole or access chamber. These environments require gas monitoring equipment, and special training. There may be poisonous or explosive gases present.
    • Whenever an access chamber is opened there should be appropriate pedestrian or traffic management procedures in place. This is the responsibility of the sewer owner or manager. DO NOT undertake a demonstration unless appropriate steps are taken to ensure yours and the public's safety.
    • DO NOT smoke or consume substances that may affect your senses such as alcohol, drugs or certain medication before or during a demonstration or near a chamber or while working with this equipment.
    • Always pressure wash and/or disinfectant after use and before storage/ transportation.
    • DO NOT transport contaminated equipment in the passenger area of a car.
    • If transported in a family  car - always line the trunk/boot with plastic, and disinfect the area when the equipment is removed.
    • If storing at home or in a garage - after cleaning and disinfecting keep in a sturdy plastic bag, and keep away from children or other family members (NEVER store without cleaning first).
    • All rags or wipes used to be sealed in a plastic bag and disposed of correctly (where appropriate to your company procedure).
    • Despite the cleaning and disinfecting of the products it is recommended that once used they are always stored in sturdy, sealed plastic bags. This also applies to sub assemblies of systems such as camera modules, springs etc.

PLEASE NOTE -  If you see or perceive a risk that has not been identified or has not been covered by this document please advise by email to > safety@gicgroup.co.in <

  • Batteries & environmental

    Batteries & Environmental Safety

Vivax-Metrotech products use three types of batteries:

    • Alkaline Batteries
    • Ni-MH (Nickel Metal Hydride) Batteries - rechargeable
    • Lithium Ion Batteries - rechargeable

     Alkaline Batteries

    • When replacing the alkaline batteries - use only the size and type specified - DO NOT mix battery types (rechargeable and alkaline).
    • DO NOT mix partially discharged and fully charged cells in the same battery pack - DO NOT mix old with new.
    • Never attempt to charge alkaline batteries.

Rechargeable Batteries - Nickel Metal Hydride and/or Lithium Ion

    • When using rechargeable batteries, use only the correct charging device supplied or specified by the manufacturer. The battery pack or the battery charger will contain circuitry to manage the charging process - other chargers (even if they have the same connector, polarity, voltage & current rating will not have the same control circuitry and can cause damage to the product, overheating, and in extreme cases fire or harm to the individual.
    • Before using for the first time, charge rechargeable batteries for 6 hours. If at any time the rechargeable batteries DO NOT last as long as anticipated - discharge fully and then charge for 6 hours.
    • Care should be taken when charging batteries - NEVER repeatedly recharge batteries (or turn power off & on) without using the instrument. If used with an inverter in a vehicle - charge the product then unplug the charger and do NOT charge again until the rechargeable batteries have been used for at least ten minutes. Failure to do this could result in the overcharging of the battery which will shorten the life of the battery, and could in some circumstances causes overheating or fire.
    • If ever the product becomes hot during the charging process IMMEDIATELY unplug the charger and use the rechargeable batteries for at least 10 minutes before recharging. If this reoccurs the next time the unit is charged - return immediately to Vivax-Metrotech for repair.
    • Lithium Ion Batteries - some products use Lithium Ion batteries - the requirements for marking and transportation are still developing. Please contact Vivax-Metrotech before shipping products containing lithium ion batteries or lithium ion battery packs on their own for any "special instructions".
    • DO NOT charge batteries for prolonged periods of time without using the locator for at least 10 minutes. Charging for prolonged period of time could overcharge the battery, reduce the battery life and in extreme circumstances cause damage to the locator and fire.

General Rules Regarding Disposal of Batteries

    • NEVER disassemble a battery or battery pack.
    • NEVER dispose of in fire or water.
    • Dispose of batteries in accordance with your Company's work practice, the prevailing laws, or recognized best practice. Always dispose of batteries responsibly.

REMEMBER - BATTERIES CONTAIN DANGEROUS CHEMICALS; CAN BE AFFECTED BY MANY THINGS SUCH AS WATER INGRESS OR HEAT - IN SOME CIRCUMSTANCES THEY CAN EXPLODE. THEY ALSO CAN CAUSE ELECTRIC SHOCKS!
